Former inmates sharing their memories, made for one of the best self guided audio tours that I had ever experienced. Amazing views of the city which had once tortured the prisoners through tiny windows were further enhanced by the dramatic sky that evening giving way to a stunning sunset.
When the sun disappeared we were treated to a 'nightly lock down' demonstration, a viewing of the spooky infirmary and fantastically well told stories of escape attempts.
After everything we had heard, the darkened walk back to the last boat to the mainland was eerie to say the least. But you do it of course. Quickly. Because you definitely do not want to miss that last boat.
*book weeks in advance for the night tour if you can. Don't wait until the day you want to go. Places fill up fast.
